Eat Your Heart Out

As a first-year coming from Houston, TX to Charlottesville, VA, I have been forced to make some major adjustments in the last month or so. For example, I’ve been surprised by the fact that once it started raining last Sunday afternoon, it seemed the rain would never stop. Incessant rain is new to me. Another change? The Charlottesville airport: single runways came as a big surprise. But the biggest change of all hasn’t been seen or heard, it has been tasted. Well, actually, it’s been the absence of the taste of wonderful authentic Mexican food that has been one of the hardest things to get used to. Ask any UVA Texan, (there are more than you think) and I’m sure they’ll agree. Now for what purpose am I ranting about being deprived of this delicious cuisine? To inform the UVa and Charlottesville worlds that a recent discovery made this past Tuesday has led me to believe that there is hope! A friend from my bible study formed a dinner group that goes to a different international restaurant every week, and by some coincidental twist of fate, I showed up for the Mexican night. Not even a Calc II midterm the next day was going to stop me from this meal! Upon arrival, I found La Michoacana to be a quaint take-out restaurant located in a white, one-story house just off of East High Street. Using my imagination, going inside was like stepping into the tiny Mexican bakery in Houston that my Dad used to take me to when I was younger. Their corn tortillas were fresh and light, and the selection of five salsas delighted me. Charlottesville has a lot to offer, and La Michoacana is no exception. Take it from a experienced and well-versed Mexican critic. This place is legit.
